2009 USPGA Championship winner YE Yang sits proudly on top of the Volvo China Open leaderboard going into the final round with a one-shot lead over Finland’s Mikko Ilonen and Jamie Donaldson of Wales, with a chasing pack of 13 others still in contention for the right to be crowned the open golf champion of China on Sunday afternoon.

In bright sunshine but with a tricky wind blowing over the Suzhou Jinji Lake International Golf Club, Yang added a four-under-par 68 to his halfway aggregate of 134 to sit on 14-under-par with a round to go.

Yang’s consistency is all the more remarkable given that he was in the air for 24 hours in between his excellent top 10 finish at the US Masters and arriving in China; with only the Pro-am for practice, the 38-year-old shot opening rounds of 68 and 66 and now has a slender one-shot lead.

“I had been preparing for the Volvo China Open whilst I was at Augusta,” said the Korean, adding, “The journey over here was long but I felt good as soon as I stepped onto the Jinji Lake golf course and I am playing very solidly.”

Tied in second place just a shot back from Yang is Mikko Ilonen from Finland and Welshman Jamie Donaldson, both on 13-under-par with Spanish ace Pablo Larrazábal a shot further back in fourth.

Asked if he and his pro-am partner, F1 driver Heikki Kovalainen, might make it a cause for double celebration, Ilonen said, “I will be doing my very best to fulfil my side of the bargain, but realistically, whilst it would be fantastic if Heikke could win for Lotus, it might be too soon for him and the team.”

Said Donaldson, who is looking for his maiden European Tour victory, “I’m playing well and need to keep focused, play my own game and I’m confident in my game.”

The rounds of the day both went to two other Welsh players, 2004 Volvo China Open champion Stephen Dodd who carded a six-under-par 66 and youngster Rhys Davies, who went one better, a single shot off the course record.

One of the most attractive pairings of the fourth and final round is that of Scotsman Marc Warren and Colin Montgomerie, recreating the partnership which won the 2007 World Cup of Golf at Mission Hills, the pair teeing-off at 10.15hrs, Beijing time.

Meanwhile, back at the business end of the 16th Volvo China Open, the final two pairings tee-off early afternoon, Spaniard Pablo Larrazábal with Jamie Donaldson at 12.40, Beijing time, with the final pairing of Mikko Ilonen and leader YE Yang goes out at 12.49.

The identity of the 2010 Volvo China Open Championship winner will be unveiled around 17.00hrs, Beijing time when he will be presented with the brand new Kosta Boda trophy, the winner’s golf jacket and a cheque for US$416,660.

The sun shone throughout the second day of the 2010 Volvo China Open and it was the Korean contingent which made most use of the weather as no fewer than four men from Korea in the top 10 going into the weekend climax of China’s national open golf championship.

21-year-old Kim Do-hoon, who shared the lead on eight-under after the opening round with Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee moved a stroke clear of the Thai star, carding a three-under-par 69 to Thongchai’s 70.

‘I am very pleased with my round and maybe a little surprised to be in the lead,” said the 21-year-old, adding, “I feel very proud to be leading the Korean contingent in the field.”

Thongchai was six-shots worse off his opening round course record despite a great improvement in the conditions and was at pains to explain what was still a very good round of golf over what is being regarded by the players as a genuine open championship track.

“It wasn’t quite going for me in the same way as it was yesterday,” said Thongchai, explaining, “This is a dangerous golf course and you have to treat it with respect.

Welsh wizard Jamie Donaldson added a 68 to his opening 66 to join Thongchai on 10-under-par, as does another Korean, YE Yang, the first Asian to win a ‘Major’. The reigning USPGA Championship winner had just 21 putts in a fine round of 66, getting the 38-year-old right into contention for the business end of the tournament this weekend.

Another man on an upward trajectory was Spanish star Pablo Larrazábal, who added a 69 to his opening 66 to sit two off the lead at the halfway stage on nine-under, as is Finn Mikko Ilonen who signed for a five-under-par 67.

Chinese number one Liang Wenchong is handily-placed on eight-under after a steady, if unspectacular second round of 70, with US Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin stretching his advantage over opposite number Colin Montgomerie, Pavin carding a 70 although the Scot made amends for Thursday’s disappointing round with a four-under-par 68.

Asked if he might feel pressure from the weight of local expectation, Liang said “I am very happy to be where I am placed at the end of the second round,” whilst Pavin described his second round as, “pretty good.”

Another pair of Koreans, Kim Dae-hyun and the ever-dangerous Noh Seung-yul look dangerous on seven-under, four off the lead. But the pairing to follow on the second round was clearly where the action was, the all-English duo of Mark Foster and Oliver Fisher; the pair were a combined 15-under-par for the day, Foster’s 64 one better than his playing partner Fisher.

Of the 72 players who made the halfway cut, Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie and team mate Graeme McDowell could both be dangerous on four under par.

“You never know,” said an upbeat Monty as he planted a tree for the environment after his round of four-under-par alongside 2004 Volvo China Open champion Stephen Dodd of Wales.

14-year-old Zhang Jin endured the agony of missing the halfway cut by a single shot, whilst the more highly-rated players catching an early flight home included 1999 Open Championship winner Paul Lawrie, 2007 Volvo China Open champion Markus Brier and European Tour legend Thomas Björn.

Some fascinating pairings should light-up Super Saturday, including the all-Korean pairing on Noh Seung-yul and Kim Dae-hyun, off at 12.13hrs followed by Corey Pavin and Chinese number one Liang Wenchong, who is certain to be the centre of local attention.

The early starters appeared to enjoy the best of the tough conditions, with Spanish ace Pablo Larrazábal joining ‘home’ favourite Liang Wenchong on six-under-par whilst the wind was down and the greens were in pristine condition.

But Thongchai Jaidee from Thailand, who missed last week’s US Masters with an arm injury recovered well to blaze his way in cool conditions to a blistering 8-under-par 64, a course record for the Wetlands and Links configuration.

Playing in the marquee group alongside Ryder Cup captains Colin Montgomerie and Corey Pavin, the 40-year-old former paratrooper played flawless golf to sit proudly at the head of a world-class leaderboard.

“I was pleased with the way I played out there, almost perfect,” said the 40-year-old, adding, “I enjoyed playing with both Ryder Cup captains and perhaps it inspired me?”

Meanwhile, Kim, playing in the final three-ball of the day matched Thongchai’s course record, the 21-year-old’s score his third 64 in recent weeks.

“I played very well,” said the youngster, adding, “I admire KJ Choi and YE Yang and I want to do what they have done.”

Liang Wenchong, who won the opening OneAsia event of the season also in China and Spaniard Larrazábal matched each other shot for shot to end the day tied on 6-under alongside late starter Jamie Donaldson of Wales.

Tucked in just a single shot back on five under is a group of four, including US Ryder Cup captain Pavin, the 50-year-old signing for a bogey-free 67, as did 2008 Volvo China Open champion Damien McGrane and his fellow Irishman Peter Lawrie.

“I was really pleased with that,” said the 50-year-old Texan, adding, “I enjoyed playing with Colin and Thongchai who played really well.”

Lurking dangerously a shot back are Swede Henrik Stenson and YE Yang of Korea, whilst flying Finn Mikko Ilonen also sits on 4-under, four off the lead.

Pavin’s Ryder Cup opposite number Colin Montgomerie endured a rollercoaster round, ending-up on level par but on course to make the cut.

Meanwhile, the curse of the defending champions appears to have struck again as defending champion Scott Strange slumped to an opening round 76, 4-over-par and he will have to improve if he is to make the halfway cut.

All in all, 49 players, almost a third of the field broke par on a difficult day for scoring but possibly as good a round as Thongchai and Kim’s 8-under was the 1-over 73 shot by 14-year-old qualifier Zhang Jin, an excellent effort from the young man from China.

With the pairings reversed for the second day, some excellent match-ups include Monty, Pavin and tournament leader Thongchai Jaidee, off at 7am, whilst Yang, Stenson and Scott Strange out just before midday, and co-leader Kim teeing-off at 08.30.

The halfway cut falls at the end of Friday’s second round with the 2010 Volvo China Open champion crowned on Sunday afternoon.

Veteran pro Zheng Wen-gen won his tenth start in the Volvo China Open with a two-stroke victory in the Southern China qualifier at Harbour Plaza Gof Club today.

Zheng was one of the pioneers of Chinese golf when he turned pro in 1994, and at the same time as the two other members of the “Chinese Triumvirate”, Zhang Lian-wei and Chen Jun.

While Zhang went on to win tournaments in various parts of the world, and Cheng gave up his playing career more than five years ago to manage golf clubs in China, Zheng has continued to play in domestic and regional tournaments based out of China’s first modern-day club, Chung Shan Hotspring Golf Club in Zhong Shan.

Zheng shot a two under par round of 70 for a two-round total of 145, one over par, mixing two birdies with four birdies over the Robert Trent Jones Jr-designed layout at Harbour Plaza Golf Club.

I’m delighted to be playing in the Volvo China Open once again and look forward to beating my best highest finish of 25^th,” said Zheng, 44. “Scoring was easier today than it was on day one and my iron play was very sharp and allowed me to set up many good birdie chances.

Overnight leader Qiu Zhi-feng looked to have thrown away the chance of victory when he bogeyed the seventh, eighth and ninth holes and then lost a ball with his drive on the 10^th to run up a double bogey six.

Birdies on the 12^th and 13^th restored the balance, however, and as others failed to mount a charge on the difficult back nine Qiu had the comfort of a two-stroke advantage over the fourth place player when playing the par-five final hole, on which he made par in a round of 76.

Gu Shu-tao shot a 71 for the joint second best score of the day to join Zheng and Qiu as the three qualifiers for the US$2.5 million Volvo China Open, which will take place at Jinji Lake International Golf Club from the 15^th to the 18^th of April.

They now recently signed a new deal with Football Club Sport Lisboa Benfica.

The event is called “Google Campfire One” and it’s all about how easy it will be to create, set up, and install apps using Google’s App Marketplace. It appears that the big focus is on how everything—apps and existing Google products—will work together seamlessly and allow for all your tools and data to sit in the cloud. Right now the appeal is for business applications, but the potential seems incredible.

The first portion of the announcement is about what developers will give and get in this whole deal. Google is offering them access to 25 million users and only asking for a one-time fee of $100 and 20% revenue in exchange—that’s less than what access to Apple’s App Store requires. Of course, Google is providing a solid system with apps being authenticated using OpenID, secured using oAuth, and made available through a universalGoogle Apps navigation system.

While there are already 50 partners right at launch, we’re hearing that after new apps are submitted, they may take a few days to show up in the Marketplace—mind you, there’s no word on what kind of approval process there is. But once an app is in the Marketplace, it’s easy for users or buyers to add them to their Google accounts: They agree to some terms of service, grant access to data—such as Gmail or GCal, and enable the app. Tada! It’ll show up in the new apps drop down.
